I got to thinking one day about the four gospels and their authors. I knew who Matthew was as well as Luke and John. But who was Mark and where did he evolve from?
It all began, I found out that it was Paul, influenced by Barnabas, to take John Mark on their first mission. Act of the Apostles 13:13 Paul and his companions then left Paphos by ship for Pamphylia, landing at the port town of Perga. There John Mark left them and returned to Jerusalem. John Mark had cold feet about moving on so, as the verse says, he returned to Jerusalem..to his mother’s house. Paul didn’t ‘t like that.
When the next mission came around, Barnabas wanted to take John Mark. Acts of the Apostles 15:38 But Paul disagreed strongly, since John Mark had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in their work.
Acts 15:39 Their disagreement was so sharp that they separated. Barnabas took John Mark with him and sailed for Cyprus.
Eventually John Mark hooked up with Peter, in Rome, and ended up being gospel writer Mark. Mark’s gospel is written while in Rome.
I wonder how many times I had given up on people just like Paul gave up on Mark. I like this story because, as great of a disciple Paul was, he quickly lost faith in Mark. Barnabas appears much more compassionate knowing that Mark had a lot to contribute. And, Mark didn’t give up. I look at where he was and what he became. I just think that is a story that covers a lot of bases.
This story changed me because I was like Paul; the mean Paul. There we’re some people I wasn’t giving a clean shot and giving up on them too soon. That was not very good of me. Scripture continues to shape my spiritual life. When once I could only spell Bible. I now allow it to help increase my wisdom and increase my intimate relationship with my Lord.
